A base camp is where a team trains, sleeps, and recovers during the group stage — its training ground and team hotel for the tournament. It isn't necessarily a city where the team plays; squads travel out to match venues and return to base between games.
Of the 48 teams, 39 set up their base camp in the United States, seven in Mexico, and two in Canada. In all, 25 of the chosen communities aren't host cities, spreading the tournament beyond the 16 match venues.
The United States is based in Irvine, California, training at the Great Park Sports Complex. It's one of seven teams basing in California, alongside Australia, Paraguay, Austria, Qatar, New Zealand, and Switzerland.
The Kansas City area has the most, with four — Algeria, Argentina, England, and the Netherlands. Another four base around New York and New Jersey. Boston, Dallas, Guadalajara, San Diego, and the San Francisco Bay Area each host two.
