About Turkiye at World Cup 2026
Turkiye are one of the most exciting squads in the entire tournament, loaded with attacking talent that makes neutrals sit up and pay attention. This is a team that could beat anyone on their day. The problem is they could also lose to anyone, and that inconsistency has defined Turkish football for decades. When they're on, they're spectacular. When they're off, it can get ugly fast.
Their World Cup history features the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. In 2002, they reached the semi-finals in Japan and South Korea, beating co-hosts South Korea in the third-place match with a squad led by Hakan Sukur and Rustu Recber. That remains one of the great tournament stories. But they haven't been back to a World Cup since, with 20 years of failing to qualify through European campaigns that always seemed to end one match too early.
They came through the European play-offs for this tournament after finishing behind Spain in their qualifying group. That says more about how strong Spain are than any weakness on Turkiye's part. Coach Vincenzo Montella guided them to the quarter-finals at Euro 2024 before losing to the Netherlands, proving the team can handle tournament pressure. The play-off route means they arrive with recent competitive experience, which is valuable.
The attacking options are genuinely mouth-watering. Arda Guler has the vision and technique to unlock any defense, Kenan Yildiz is developing rapidly at Juventus, and captain Hakan Calhanoglu controls everything from midfield. The depth behind the starters is impressive too, with young players at top European clubs pushing for places. Calhanoglu is closing in on the all-time caps record and will want to make this tournament count.
Group D with the United States, Paraguay, and Australia is interesting. Turkiye might have the most talent in the pool, but the US have home advantage and Paraguay are defensively stubborn. The final group match against the United States could be decisive for both teams and has the potential to be one of the tournament's best group-stage encounters.
The cautionary tale is Euro 2020, when Turkiye were hyped as dark horses and lost all three group matches without scoring. That experience is a reminder that talent alone isn't enough. But the squad is deeper now, the young players are more experienced, and there's a growing maturity in how they handle big occasions. If the attackers click, Turkiye are a genuine threat to go deep. Just don't call them dark horses. That label has brought them nothing but bad luck, and they've heard it before.
