About Qatar at World Cup 2026

Qatar hosted the 2022 World Cup and it didn't go well on the pitch. Three defeats, a 7-1 aggregate score, and the unwanted distinction of being one of the weakest host nations in tournament history. The football world wasn't kind about it. But there's more to Qatar than that dismal showing suggests, and they're back to prove it.

Their tournament record before 2022 was nonexistent since that was their debut, but their broader football story is more nuanced. They won back-to-back Asian Cups in 2019 and 2023, beating Japan and Jordan in the respective finals. That's not the record of a team that can't compete. The problem in 2022 was preparation, with years of meaningless friendlies instead of proper qualifying leaving them soft for the intensity of a World Cup.

This time, Qatar went through a real qualifying campaign, which should make a difference. They topped their group in the fourth round of Asian qualifying, playing competitive matches with genuine stakes. The journey wasn't always smooth, with some poor results leading to Roberto Mancini's dismissal in late 2024, but former Spain coach Julen Lopetegui has brought top-level European experience and a more structured approach.

Lopetegui has a point to prove himself, having been famously sacked by Spain two days before the 2018 World Cup. Forward Akram Afif remains one of the best players in Asian football and gives Qatar a creative spark that was missing in 2022. The squad is aging and needs freshening up, but Lopetegui has begun integrating younger players alongside the experienced core.

Group B with Switzerland, Canada, and Bosnia and Herzegovina is challenging. Qatar will be considered the weakest team in the pool, and all three opponents have more quality on paper. The Bosnia match might offer the best opportunity, but even that looks difficult given the Europeans' recent form and fighting spirit.

Honestly, any points would represent progress for Qatar. They're not expected to advance, and the weight of that 2022 humiliation still hangs over the program. But a competitive performance, even in defeat, would help rebuild credibility. The 2034 hosting duties are already secured, so this tournament is partly about showing the world that Qatari football has substance beyond stadiums and spending. One shock result would change the entire conversation.
