About Haiti at World Cup 2026
Haiti are back at the World Cup for the first time since 1974, and it's one of the tournament's most remarkable stories. This is a country that hasn't been able to play home matches at their own stadium because it was overtaken by armed gangs. They played qualifying home games in Curacao. The fact that they're here at all speaks to a resilience that goes far beyond football.
Their 1974 campaign is part of World Cup folklore. Haiti lost all three group matches but scored against both Italy and Argentina through Emmanuel Sanon, a forward who played part of his career with the San Diego Sockers. Sanon actually gave Haiti a six-minute lead against Italy before the Europeans recovered. He received a state funeral when he passed away in 2008 at just 56, and his record of 37 goals stood until Duckens Nazon recently surpassed it.
Qualifying was an achievement in itself. With the three co-hosts absent from CONCACAF qualifying, the path was more open than usual, but Haiti still had to finish above established nations like Costa Rica and Honduras. Coach Sebastien Migne built a disciplined defensive unit that absorbs pressure and hits teams on the counter. The organization and tactical awareness he's instilled have transformed a squad that used to rely on individual moments.
Nazon will almost certainly be in the squad, bringing 44 goals from 79 international appearances and a remarkably nomadic club career that has taken him through France, India, England, Belgium, Scotland, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Iran. Veteran goalkeeper Johny Placide provides the emotional heartbeat. The squad lacks star power compared to their group rivals, but the togetherness and sense of purpose is palpable.
Group C with Brazil, Morocco, and Scotland is brutally tough. Haiti will be underdogs in every match, and getting out of the group would require multiple miracles. The Scotland match is their best chance at a result, a game between two nations with long World Cup absences and plenty to play for. Even a draw there would be celebrated back home like a title win.
Realistically, Haiti won't advance past the group stage. But that's not what this is about. This is about representation, pride, and showing the world that a small Caribbean nation facing enormous challenges can still compete on the biggest stage. Every minute they spend at this World Cup is a victory for Haitian football, and if they can produce a moment of magic, something like Sanon's goal against Italy 52 years ago, it will live forever in the country's memory.
