About Algeria at World Cup 2026
Algeria have a World Cup history marked by one of football's greatest injustices. In 1982 in Spain, they became the first team ever eliminated despite winning two group-stage matches. West Germany and Austria played out a mutually convenient 1-0 result in the final group game, a match so scandalous it became known as the Disgrace of Gijon. That incident directly led to the rule that final group matches must be played simultaneously. It's a pivotal moment in World Cup history, and Algeria were the victims.
Beyond 1982, the record is mixed. Four other appearances have produced just one knockout-round trip, in 2014 in Brazil, where they pushed eventual champions Germany to extra time in the round of 16 before losing 2-1. That performance proved Algeria could compete with the best when organized and motivated. The 2010 and 2022 qualifying failures were disappointments, with the team going through a turbulent period that included coaching changes and player controversies.
This time, qualification came through a steady if unspectacular African campaign. Algeria won seven of their last eight matches under coach Vladimir Petkovic, the former Switzerland boss who brings European tactical discipline to a team that had been lacking structure. The approach is pragmatic: defend well, transition quickly, and rely on individual quality in the final third. It's not exciting, but it's effective.
Captain Riyad Mahrez still carries the creative burden and remains the team's most recognizable name. But the exciting Mohamed Amoura, who plays for Wolfsburg in Germany, is emerging as the next generation's star. He finished as top scorer in the first round of African qualifying and has the pace and finishing to trouble any defense. A fun footnote: Zinedine Zidane's son Luca recently made his debut in goal for Algeria, adding a layer of narrative to an already interesting team.
Group J with Argentina, Austria, and Jordan is challenging but not impossible. Argentina are the clear favorites, but Algeria have already shown they can compete with South American giants. The Austria match is the swing game, a contest between two well-organized European-coached sides fighting for second place. Jordan will be determined but lack the experience of the other three teams.
Getting out of the group is the realistic target, and it's achievable. A solid second-place finish behind Argentina, or even a third-place qualification, is within reach if Petkovic's defensive structure holds. Algeria have the talent to cause problems for anyone, but they lack the depth and consistency for a deep run. A repeat of the 2014 performance, where they competed fiercely and went home with heads held high, would represent a successful tournament and restore pride after years of underperformance.
